K-pop group BTS just smashed another world-first

Aside from being very good at the music thing, Korean pop kings BTS are smashing records.

The group‘s album Love Yourself: Tear will debut at number one on Billboard‘s Top 200 album chart for the week of Jun. 2, becoming the first K-pop group to do so.

“It‘s the first No. 1 for the seven-member group, and the first K-pop album to lead the tally,” according to .

The Billboard 200 chart ranks albums based on traditional album sales, downloads and streams. Love Yourself: Tear unseats Post Malone‘s beerbongs & bentleys, which sat on top of the chart for three consecutive weeks and now drops to number two.

On , members of the group thanked fans: “It‘s wonderful and very overwhelming. Thank you everyone who has listened our music! I will keep doing my best!”

Mostly sung in Korean, Love Yourself: Tear also marks the first time a foreign language release has topped the album chart since 2006, when UK classical crossover group Il Divo had a number one in Ancora.

BTS have been the only K-pop group so far to crack the top 10 on Billboard‘s Top 200. Their last album, 2017‘s Love Yourself: Her, peaked at number seven on the list.

The group‘s American fanbase is significant, with BTS taking out Top Social Artist at the Billboard Music Awards in May, performing single “Fake Love,” at the Las Vegas event. It was the follow-up performance to the group‘s last year, which saw the group smash out a whirlwind press tour in the country — so, that chart-topping popularity doesn‘t come as too big a surprise.

It‘s also not the first record smashed by BTS. Last year, the group for most Twitter engagements, entering the Guinness Book of Records for having an average of 252,200 retweets per tweet on Twitter to date.
